Apicoectomy

An apicoectomy is a procedure performed when a root canal treatment by the dentist has not been successful. During the procedure, the inflamed tissue around the root tip of the tooth or molar, along with a small portion of the root tip itself, is removed. Afterward, the root canal is cleaned, filled, and sealed to prevent further infection.

The Procedure

You will receive an anesthetic similar to what your dentist uses. If you feel anxious, please let us know, and we will take that into account. You will be covered with sterile drapes to ensure a clean working environment. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the gum tissue will be loosened to access the root tip of the affected tooth or molar. The inflamed tissue around the root tip will be carefully removed. This often involves removing a small portion of the root tip itself. After removing the inflamed tissue and root tip, the root canal will be thoroughly cleaned and then filled with a filling material. The wound will be stitched with material that will dissolve on its own after 2 to 3 weeks. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes. After the procedure, a gauze pad will usually be placed in your mouth to stop any bleeding, and you will need to bite down on it for at least 30 minutes. A follow-up X-ray will be taken after the procedure, and after 6 months, another X-ray will be done to assess whether the infection has cleared and the treatment was successful.

Aftercare

If necessary, you will be given a prescription for pain relieversmouthwash, or other medication. You will return for a check-up in 6 months, where we will take another X-ray to evaluate whether the infection has disappeared and if the treatment has been successful.
